Welcome to the MANANA web site End-users of mobile applications are almost always unaware of the underlying network infrastructure: while this is a desired UX and engineering goal, it prevents the user to easily know whose enterprises and nation states are involved in her usage of the app, and the implied rights/risks. Thus it prevents the user from making informed choices about the adoption of apps and services, limiting the criterion to economic convenience and (marketing-affected) popularity. Moreover, despite data sovereignty regulations being defined and applied, it is hard to verify if mobile-app traffic is compliant (i.e. if no data exchange is performed towards companies or countries not guaranteeing the users' rights). Like food labels providing ingredients and allergens, MANANA aims at providing mobile-app users with practical and easy-to-use "communication infrastructure ingredients", and allow them to easily and safely share this information with researchers and regulatory bodies (contributing to a crowdsourced publicly-available monitoring system). The information monitored includes the network services contacted (country, organization) and the communication services employed (telcos traversed, countries traversed, encryption mechanisms employed) quantifying the traffic exchanged with/through these. Moreover, reports on user rights and risks are in association with the detected countries (leveraging third-party public indexes and reports). The project started with a grant from GÉANT Innovation Programme 2024. https://community.geant.org/innovationprogramme
